Factory Structure and Project Features:
The main factory building columns are concrete structures, with steel crane beams and steel support systems, steel truss roofs and metal enclosure systems. The steel structure components include approximately 4,500 tons of steel coal hoppers.
Project Challenges & Overcoming Process:
The large-span coal conveyor trusses and steel coal hoppers were fabricated on-site due to transportation difficulties. Despite overcoming challenges such as once-in-a-century rain and snow (advance planning, cross-working, and increased night shifts), a limited construction site, insufficient equipment (using a gantry crane, increasing staff, and training to improve operational skills), poor on-site installation conditions (hoisting with a tower crane and winch chain), and the welding of the stainless steel lining of the coal hopper, the project was delivered on schedule.
Power plants are not like ordinary buildings. They house gigantic, heavy, and vibrating equipment, operate under extreme temperatures, and are critical infrastructure that must be reliable for decades. Steel is uniquely suited to meet these demands.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Steel offers incredible strength for its weight. This allows for the construction of massive buildings with long, open spans needed to house turbines and boilers, all while minimizing foundation loads.
Speed of Construction: Steel components are prefabricated off-site in controlled factory conditions. This allows for parallel construction (foundations being poured while the structure is being built) and rapid on-site assembly, significantly shortening the project timeline and reducing costs.
Design Flexibility & Large Spans: Steel beams and trusses can span vast distances without needing intermediate support columns. This is essential for creating the large, unobstructed "halls" required for a Turbine Hall or Boiler House, allowing for easy installation and maintenance of massive equipment.
Durability and Resilience: Steel structures are designed to withstand significant dynamic loads (like vibrations from turbines), thermal stresses, and environmental forces (wind, seismic activity). They are ductile, meaning they can deform under extreme loads without sudden failure, which is a critical safety feature.
Modifiability: Power plants often undergo upgrades and retrofits over their lifespan. Steel structures are relatively easy to modify, reinforce, or expand compared to reinforced concrete.
Recyclability: Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world, making it a more sustainable choice compared to other materials.
A power plant is a collection of several specialized buildings and structures, each with unique requirements.
A. The Main Power Block
Boiler House (for Thermal Plants):
Function: Encases and supports the massive boiler, which can be over 10 stories high and weigh thousands of tons.
Steel Structure: A complex, multi-level braced frame made of heavy-duty columns and beams. It must support the "top-hung" boiler, withstand extreme heat, and provide access platforms for maintenance. This is often the tallest structure in the plant.
Turbine Hall / Generator Hall:
Function: Houses the steam/gas turbine and the electrical generator. This is the heart of the power generation process.
Steel Structure: Typically a large portal frame or truss structure designed for a very long, clear span. A key feature is the integrated overhead crane girder. These girders run the length of the hall and support high-capacity cranes (e.g., 100-400 tons) used for installing and maintaining the heavy turbine components. The structure must be incredibly stiff to handle the crane's dynamic loads.
B. Supporting Infrastructure
Pipe Racks:
Function: These are the arteries of the plant, carrying high-pressure steam, water, fuel, and other fluids between different components (e.g., from the boiler to the turbine).
Steel Structure: Long, elevated steel frames (bents) that support numerous pipes of varying sizes and weights. They must be designed to handle thermal expansion of the pipes.
Conveyor Systems (for solid fuel plants):
Function: Transport fuel like coal or biomass from storage areas to the boiler.
Steel Structure: Long-span steel trusses that enclose the conveyor belts, often elevated high above the ground.
Flue Gas Stacks and Ducts:
Function: Carry exhaust gases away from the boiler.
Steel Structure: While the stack itself can be concrete, the extensive ductwork leading to it is made of steel plates and supported by a steel frame.
Cooling Tower Structures:
Function: Support the components of the cooling system.
Steel Structure: The internal support structure for large mechanical draft cooling towers is often made of galvanized or stainless steel to resist corrosion.
Building Frames: Steel beams, columns, and trusses form the main structural support for buildings like turbine halls, boiler houses, and control rooms. They are ideal for creating large, open spaces with minimal internal columns, which is essential for accommodating large, complex machinery like turbines and generators.
Equipment Support: Steel frames and supports are specifically engineered to bear the immense weight and forces generated by heavy equipment, including boilers, turbines, generators, and transformers. This ensures the equipment remains stable and operates safely.
Piping and Ductwork: Extensive networks of steel pipes and ducts transport high-pressure steam, gases, and other fluids throughout the plant. Steel is selected for its ability to withstand extreme pressures and temperatures.
Access and Maintenance Structures: Steel is used for platforms, walkways, stairs, and crane rails, providing safe and robust access for plant personnel to conduct maintenance, inspections, and repairs.
